MR BRIGHTSIDE
by KILLERS
Little did The Killers know when they were writing Mr Brightside in the pre-digital music era that the song would transcend decades, formats and playlists to become the stuff of legend on the UK Official Chart.
Originally released in 2003 but only really making an impact upon its re-release in 2004, the indie-pop anthem birthed on The Killers' debut album, Hot Fuss, peaked at Number 10 and spent just four weeks in the Top 100 at the time. However, Mr Brightside would go on to become a bona fide classic.
Written by band members Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning, Mr Brightside crossed the 1 million UK sales mark in December 2018, some 15 years after its release. Yet, not only has the indie disco favourite racked up impressive pure sales, it's also the most-streamed song in Official Chart history to have been released in the pre-streaming era (pre-2010).
It's perhaps no surprise then that The Killers' most famous ditty has gone on to become the longest-running hit of all time on the Official Singles Chart. In 2021 the Official Charts Company confirmed that Mr Brightside had become the first track ever to spend a whole five years on chart as it logged its 260th non-consecutive week in the UK rankings. No other song in UK chart history has notched up anywhere near as many weeks in the Official Singles Chart Top 100.
