OK, so no else has mentioned it yet but a milestone at #61 as the The Killers rack up a record 400 weeks on the Top 100 chart. Orginally charting on 5 June 2004 at its peak of 10, it has spent only 147 of those 400 weeks in the Top 75. Which isn't brilliant to be honest. They have much better songs, but given Mr. B is the lead track on their 2013 greatest hits album, it probably picks up more streams than other tracks that way.

Next in the longevity stakes is Lewis Capaldi's Someone You Loved at 227 Top 100 weeks and given that was a 2018 new entry, and spent 157 weeks in the Top 75 (69%), and 7 weeks at #1, I'd say this was an overall better showing.

oh i forgot to mention it in my brits ramble but bimini has my undying love and gratitude for the month for what she said on that stage presenting international song.

things are really hard for us right now with politicians trying to hard to kill us off but hate will never win and we’ll all get through this biiiig stretch together.

trans men are men, trans women are women (shoutout to yall today! <3), non-binary and genderfluid people are as valid as ever. oh and trans rights are human rights 🏳️‍⚧️

before i get into chart talk, a brits debrief.

i’ll get into the hot topic (not talking about the goth shop we unfortunately don’t have!) later but first of all i was really happy with the winners for the most part.

dance music had a good night with becky hill not even having a terrible performance of the night - not even the second worst either - and calvin harris taking that surprise win! i speak for us all when i say fred again.. was robbed though, his music is class.

jungle had such a classy performance and im happy they won group of the year, presented by two thirds of green day no less! i’m happy casisdead got that support over central sh*te because cas brings something really new to the uk rap scene with the synth beats and energetic flow. the support was crazy. and bring me the horizon’s brit was long overdue but im happy they finally got it, they’ve made some amazing metal over the years (kingslayer is one of my favourite songs of all time). and oli sykes is gonna SLAY in the maid dress.

internationally, my jaw fell to the floor when sza won international artist, we love her here, and as a phoebe bridgers enthusiast boygenius winning was an absolute treat. flowers shouldn’t have won best song though, sounds like it was written by an ai. and for the love of god if he was real, STOP FLAUNTING KYLIE. “global icon” by backside. that should have gone to lana del rey - a real global icon.

but no, the hot topic is none other than raye. going indie was the best thing that happened to her. “r&b music doesn’t sell!” - she wins best r&b act. “you’re a dance-pop singer and only that!” - she wins best song with a trip-hop tune. “you’re not good enough for an album!” - wins album of the year with a fantastic overdue debut. all this AS AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST. IM SOBBING IN MY SOFA DRUNK ON PEPSI ON A SATURDAY NIGHT. and her vocals - oh my god. she’s got the vocals. the only award she didn’t win was best pop to dua lipa but she’s also awesome so i’m glad she won.

lmk your thoughts on the brits down below, personally i enjoyed it a lot ^^

For as much as I love RAYE, I'm happy that Dua won an award. Surprised and a bit disappointed that Dave didn't take any trophies home with him.

Fred was 100% robbed of the dance act award, I like Calvin but his ego is horrid. Pleasantly surprised you didn’t hate Becky’s performance tbh 😅

avatar

2

yeah dua’s a great pop artist indeed. regarding dave, i feel the same way about my girl little simz but considering casisdead is really good im far from mad he won over her. besides, when the camera cut to simz she didn’t look salty unlike that dude from young fathers who had such a stiff face. poor sportsmanship from him. have a good weekend and i hope djo gets the number one soon!

avatar

2

yeah macie disconnect isn’t as bad as i remember it, and the atmosphere on the stage was there. baddadan was completely uncalled for though. and yeah i don’t like calvin’s ego even if i think his accent is amazing

Big up Dave every time, song of the year was definitely his, with Central Cee as they had ten weeks at number 1, but it is what it is. Can’t complain about Escapism since it’s a good song also 👏

Stop hating Kylie, as much I like Lana , you can't compare Kylie's achievement in pop to Lana's, By the way, you are all time talking about respect, genderless and blah blah, but you also do these aggressive comments to an artist. I guess you're such an hypocrite

I don't suppose I will be popular, but I can't see what's so special about RAYE winning six Brit Awards. She went to the Brit School, she won 6 Brit Awards. Shocker. There are close financial links between the two. None of those 6 awards were voted for by the public. The one she didn't win was the public vote category. I have nothing against RAYE, I just think the Brit Awards being largely out of the publics hands makes them pointless.

M

2

Actually yes, one of them was fan voted (Best R&B), use your brain. If it was so “rigged” she would’ve won her other nominations over the years. Grow up.

all the genre categories were voted for though and raye won best r&b? this wasn’t the first time she was nominated either. speaking of the votes though congrats to bmth. living for oli’s femboy era.

And now for the bit where I show my personal bias.

DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE PART WHERE THESE SONGS BECAME AMAZING TIER:

The Last Dinner Party - Nothing Matters [19]

Beyoncé - TEXAS HOLD 'EM [1]

Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten [12] (Have you ever noticed how she and Kylie look WAY too alike. It certainly felt that way on the red carpet.)

SO GOOD IT HURTS TIER:

Noah Kahan & Sam Fender - Homesick [27]

YG Marley - Praise Jah In The Moonlight [7]

Twenty One Pilots - Overcompensate [34] (At least they've made the 40, something which most bands can't do with being a smelly flop. Right, Good Neighbours?)

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder On The Dancefloor [24]

AS POSITIVE AS COVID-19 TIER:

RAYE - Worth It. [38] (Where were you lot last year refusing to stream this!? Explain yourselves in the comments if you wanna...)

Central Cee - I Will [40] (So much for that change of direction, eh?)

Ariana Grande - yes, and? [11] (Fun fact: Ariana lost 360,000 Instagram followers after posting this song. Clearly, people shouldn't pay attention to the lyrics.)

Kanye West/Ty Dolla $ign - BURN [33]

Charli XCX - von dutch [26]

Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer [9]

IT'S OKAY TIER:

Jack Harlow - Lovin On Me [32] (Make an album Jack. You won't.)

RAYE ft. 070 Shake - Escapism. [13] (Overplayed to tedium, so that's why it's this low. I'm not THAT biased. ;)

Muni Long - Made For Me [36]

Dua Lipa - Training Season [8]

21 Savage - redrum [17]

ERR.......... SURPLUS TO REQUIREMENTS??? TIER:

SZA - Saturn [21] (I honestly forgot everything about this record.)

Noah Kahan - Stick Season [6]

Tate McRae - greedy [22] (Point all the fingers you own at the BRITs for this going back up. Why can't you just perform exes you pest? 😤)

Kanye West/Ty Dolla $ign - CARNIVAL [5] (Play his song on Radio 1, you frauds. He's Top 5 now, you can't ignore him forever.)

Djo - End Of Beginning [4]

Zara Larsson & David Guetta - On My Love [29] (Oh my days, can this leave yet?)

Yung Filly - Grey [31]

Calvin Harris & Rag'n'Bone Man - Lovers In A Past Life [14]

I AM NOT A FAN OF THIS SONG TIER:

Tate McRae - exes [25]

Pozer - Kitchen Stove [28] (I thought this had left in truth.)

Ella Henderson ft. Rudimental - Alibi [10]

Becky Hill & Sonny Fodera - Never Be Alone [23] (Blame the physicals for this climb. I should be glad it isn't Top 20.)

REMOVE THESE AT ONCE OR I WILL BE CROSS TIER:

cassö/RAYE/D-Block Europe - Prada [18] (The things I would do to eject this out of the 40..)

Bryson Tiller - Whatever She Wants [20] (Where's the appeal in this, exactly?)

Michael Marcagi - Scared To Start [16]

NewEra - Birds In The Sky [39]

Good Neighbours - Home [30]

THE CREATORS OF THESE SONGS LITERALLY DROPPED THE SOAP TIER:

The Weeknd/JENNIE/Lily Rose Depp - One Of The Girls [37]

Paul Russell - Lil Boo Thang [35]

Benson Boone - Beautiful Things [2]

Kygo & Ava Max - Whatever [15] (Crass. But without the "cr".)

Teddy Swims - Lose Control [3] (Bleedin' heck this song is tripe.)

Chart Review 08/03/24

Man, the BRITs were uneventful, weren't they? I mean, there I was, on Saturday night, trying to explain to my mum why the likes of Bring Me The Horizon were worthy of overcoming The Rolling Stones, and having to come to terms with the fact that underground rapper CASISDEAD has more BRITs than Radiohead, Jamiroquai and BTS. I mean, crikey, I've barely heard of that guy, and there he is on that stage, more worthy of an award than Dave, Central Cee and J Hus. Look, there's being eccentric with your voting, and then there's spinning a wheel and picking whatever name it lands on. Given you couldn't go 5 minutes without RAYE tearing up onstage, it probably makes less sense than it should.

I guess that's why the singles chart looks as dead as it usually turns out to be, even though there's a knee-slapping 3 new hits of varying levels of successful musicianship, naturally none of which is enough to dislodge Queen B from the summit. You can clock that up as 3 weeks at the summit for TEXAS HOLD 'EM, but given Benson Boone's just overtaken her on the Spotify chart, her days are starting to get a little numbered. I just wish they weren't. You don't know disappointment until your favourite tune of the moment is overlapped at just the wrong time of year, by the worst tune you can imagine without strangling your descendants for streaming it. Fun fact: I still haven't heard the Benson Boone tune in full. Can you blame me?

Er... what else has happened, um... Kanye West is in the Top 5, so I guess he'll be having some fiestas soon I presume. His first Top 5 smash since that one in 2018 with the Roblox people and the somewhat sexual imagery. You know, T H A T one. The one that goes, I LOVE IT. Come on, I thought you knew it off by heart by now. Ah well. Oh, and Alibi by Ella Henderson is in the best-sellers now. I'd post you how disappointed I am at the British public for letting this happen, but you sadly can't put pictures on the OCC website. Then again, back when you could, the Disqus system made their signing in logic so strenuous it frazzled by puny little cranium. What was I saying? Oh right. Stop giving Ella Henderson love. Or else.

Elsewhere, and RAYE is goated, if the BRITs were anything to go by. Just the SIX awards given to Rachel Agatha Keen for her My 21st Century Blues opus, as RAYE read the Stormzy Official Licensed guide to independent success and wtched the money roll in. This naturally means that former chart-topper and four minute TikTok graverobber Escapism. shoots back to 13 in its first Top 40 appearance since that wonderous time of, erm, May 2023. Even though co-star 070 Shake has had as much prowess since then as I've had posting these reviews. Of a more noteworthy comment, though, and the resulting success sees a song cruelly ignored in the past breach the 40 for the first time. Step forward, album highlight Worth It.. (I intended to put two full stops there. All the songs on her album have those comatose sentence stoppers, and it kills the mood a little.) Played to death on Radio 1 at the end of 2023, and the public received it warmly by not streaming it at all. Given the only other song from her album, Flip A Switch., barely grazed the Top 40, this is slightly objective from her audience. Ah well. We can remove any lingering doubts now as Worth It. breaks its way to 38, a position it should've gotten months ago. Now make some new music already RAYE, I'm still somewhat judging you on the basis that your album got stopped by Shania Twain a year ago.

Her album doesn't top the charts now either, only able to fly up to No.5, as the latest seven-day wonder at the top are Oasis stalwart Liam Gallagher and Stone Roses axeman John Squire, who predictably sail to the summit with their self-titled collaborative album, a far cry from the days when John's second album reached the whopping heights of 90 some twenty years prior. Lead single Just Another Rainbow, of course, fell from 16 to NOWHERE back in January, proof that physical sales don't get you anywhere in the long-term, but you know, the album's alright, even though I bet barely any of the 40,000 buyers hail from outside the North West. Now, as a Mancunian myself, I am slightly gutted that Everything Everything's latest behemoth, Mountainhead only got 9, primarily because lead single Cold Reactor is one of, if not the best thing you'll hear all year. This could be the song to stop The Last Dinner Party in my Fab 50 countdown at the end of the year. But I'm getting ahead of myself...

I haven't talked about him that much in recent weeks, probably becuase there's not much to say, but Michael Marcagi is now in the Top 20, and I am officially campaigning for him to get out as soon as possible. Just need to remove One Of The Girls, Prada, Lil Boo Thang and Whatever first, and then we'll talk, Mikey. Pozer's up one, so clearly no one forgot about him, and Bryson Tiller can also be found in the 20 best-sellers, again, a song that doesn't do much outside of soundtrack 17 year old Chevrolets from San Francisco. And not the good Chevrolets, either.

As for the ACTUAL new hits, No.26 sees the return of music's great underachiever, Charli XCX. It's been a decade since she popped up on that Icona Pop song which hit the top, then had big success with Boom Clap and Doing It, but seems to have ended up as one of the most overhyped artists ever since. Everyone loves her, apart from the charts it seems. Album topped the chart in 2022, lead single doesn't make the Top 20. Fab 50 pop-up and Sam Smith collab In The City struggled to 41, yet her Barbie contribution Speed Drive went Top 10. Her lack of success is one of life's great mysteries, alongside the omnipresence of Ed Sheeran and why her debut single in 2008 was called !Franchesckaar!. Anyways, she's back, and she's at least in the 40 this time with von dutch, even though she makes some rather ambitious claims in the chorus. "I'm your number one", she utters. In your imagination, maybe. Right now she's 25 places lower, so she may be forever stuck as a critical darling until the cows come home. And I think the bovines are starting to pull up outside my house.

The other new entry on show is down at 34, and after 8 years of providing the soundtrack of 2016 (along with the usual suspects, as 2016 was the WORST year for music in a long time), Twenty One Pilots are finally back. Admittedly yes, they have made music in that intervening period, but after Level Of Concern stiffed at 43 in 2020, you could make a bold claim that they were never coming back. That claim is well and truly shattered, if Overcompensate is anything to go by, a song that just doesn't sound like Top 40 material in this day and age, given it's more reminiscent of HYAENA by Travis Scott if anything. But I loved HYAENA, so naturally I've taken this song to heart. Their first Top 40 hit since Suicide Squad song Heathens went Top 5, and their album Clancy is out in May. Buy it, off the back of this single alone.

Outside the 40, and it's looking grim for the UK's Eurovision chances, if Olly Alexander's Dizzy is anything to go by. Not only because the song is so mid I have trouble remembering a single part of it, but because it's entered at miserly 42. Come on, Olly, why can't you be like Ireland? Or Croatia? Or Finland? At the very least, you could've made it not sound like 60% of your back catalogue. No.46 sees Miley Cyrus collab with Pharrell Williams, and given the chart position it seems that no one wanted it to happen, nor cared. Richy Mitch & The Coalminers are at 41 for some reason, FE!N by Travis Scott has now risen to 47, Skrapz, Nines and D-Block Europe are at 51, Fred Again.. could've done better with his new one, a Kanye album track charts for the first time at 100, and No.92 sees Myles Smith enter the public consciousness. Shame he sounds like David Kushner.

Next week sees everyone fold up their baskets and go home to watch Celebrity Big Brother, as Ariana Grande's just released seventh album Eternal Sunshine, so expect at least 2 Top 10 smashes in the form of yes, and?, and whatever else takes the listeners' affection. Mazza_l20 returns off the back of surprise Top 20 hit Murdaside, but given he's a serial offender I don't think he'll be having hits for a good while, Drake has popped up on a remix of Spotify underachiever act ii: date @ 8 by 4batz, so expect that to do something, Clavish is back, d4vd returns, Norah Jones and Judas Priest attempt to stop the Ariana juggernaut, Nina Nesbitt is back to impress nobody, and FLO are back with new music for the first time since that Fly Girl schtick in 2023 which reached No.38. Given they've been lapped several times in the BBC Sound Of affections by The Last Dinner Party, they'll need to spice up their lives and make some brill sounds. So obviously their new one sounds like Fly Girl Part 2. There goes the love for you girls, I guess.

I'm off to do nothing for 7 days. And finally, as Welsh band Helen Love once sang in 1998, Long Live The UK Music Scene. Too-da-loo.

(P.S. I would've posted my Top 20 analysis on Sunday, but the website was having a hissy-fit. At least you haven't made a shambles of the Top 100 this week, right OCC?)

Two weeks in a row where the #1 song in my rankings has fallen victim to ACR. First ‘I Remember Everything’, now ‘Houdini’! 😩

Thankfully the Great Tier count is back up to four and it’s lead by one of the best hits of 2023. :)

Happy International Women’s Day!

Amazing that Charli XCX’s new single is the highest debut of the week! I absolutely love it whenever she tries electronic music but ‘Von Dutch’ genuinely might have one of her best drops yet.

Also, that music video will definitely end up as one of my favourites of the entire year!

So glad for RAYE landing three Top 40 appearances this week, especially ‘Escapism’ getting taken off ACR to re-enter as high as it did.

Seeing her win big at the BRITs with a history-making six awards in one night was truly incredible. She absolutely deserves the success and her performance was by far the best for me! ❤️

‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ will officially become Beyoncé’s longest-running #1 hit in the UK if it spends another week there… but ‘Beautiful Things’ unfortunately overtook it on Spotify a couple days back. :/

Happy that the former still there for now at the very least and that it tied ‘Crazy In Love’ and ‘Beautiful Liar’ for her personal best!
