BABOOSHKA
by KATE BUSH
Kate Bush's Babooshka is a wildly left-of-centre art-rock track that, somehow, returned her to chart prominence in the UK following the mixed reception of her rushed second album, Lionheart, released less than a year after her impressive debut record The Kick Inside, which included the record-breaking Number 1 single, Wuthering Heights.
Taking the kookiness of Wuthering Heights and dialling it up to 11, Babooshka tells the story of a beleaguered wife who, wanting to test her husband's loyalty, dons the alter-ego of a seductress called Babooshka. This backfires magnificently, of course.
Babooshka returned Kate to the UK Top 5 for the first time since Wuthering Heights, and its scintillating production made use of the Fairlight CMI synthesiser for the first time, and instrument Kate would master and use to maximum effect on her magum opus, Hounds of Love.
