LET'S HAVE ANOTHER PARTY

The follow-up to the Number 2 song Let’s Have A Party, 1954's Let’s Have Another Party (see what they did there?) went one better and made Winifred Atwell the first black artist to enjoy a UK Official Singles Chart Number 1, as well as the only female to score an instrumental chart-topper.

Trinidadian-born Winifred Atwell would often appear on stage with two pianos – one a grand piano, and the other a slightly battered upright affair bought for two pounds and ten shillings – on which she’d play medleys of ragtime hits. Let’s Have Another Party was a composite of ten bits from songs such as When the Red, Red Robin (Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along), Bye Bye Blackbird and The Sheikh Of Araby among others, and spent five of its eight weeks on the chart at Number 1.

Let’s Have Another Party took the accolade of UK Christmas Number 1 in 1954, it was the first and only instrumental UK Christmas Number 1.
