RETURN TO SENDER
by ELVIS PRESLEY
Elvis Presley’s 13th UK Official Singles Chart Number 1 was his only festive chart-topper in the UK. Taken from the film Girls! Girls! Girls!, it was written by Winfield Scott and Otis Blackwell to suit Presley's musical style, and was the latest collaboration by them – following the earlier success of the Winfield-written All Shook Up and Don’t Be Cruel – for Presley after they were hired to create songs for his many films.
Return To Sender was Presley’s return to rock and roll after the apparently disappointing reception in America to the more crooner-y She’s Not You (although it was Presley’s previous UK Number 1, so clearly Britain didn’t mind). Return To Sender was released on October 2, 1962, but entered the UK chart at the beginning of December and settled in for a three week stay at the top from December 19 to become 1962’s UK Official Singles Chart Christmas Number 1.
