probably because of kids parties and children under the age of 5 ruining their poor parents’ spotify by playing it.

i’m not having kids but if i did i’d be throwing lana del rey’s music in the cot instead. gotta teach them young lol

by the way does anyone have any album recommendations i can listen to over the weekend? i’m always looking for hidden gems and finding new favourites. a coursemate recommended me “treats” by sleigh bells and i ended up loving it because of its chaotic and downright futuristic sounds! hope that’ll be the case with some of your recs

in the meantime, while you’re giving me an album, i highly suggest you check out “time n place” by kero kero bonito - genuinely some of the most joyful pop-rock i’ve heard in recent times. flyway is such a cute song too, i reckon most of you will love it

The only album I’m thinking of is Zara Larsson’s new one VENUS but I can’t see you liking it too much tbh đŸ˜©  Also cool I might add it to my (admittedly short) list of albums to review 😅

Prada hitting 20 weeks in the top 10 is so insane to me! Literally used to dream about RAYE getting this much success, and now within the space of not even 2 years she’s released her debut album, got her first ever UK #1 single, and a whopping SEVEN BRIT nominations as well as winning Best Female Act at the MOBOs the other day!! đŸ„čđŸ„č

Chart Review 09/02/24

zzz... zzz.... zz- AAAHHHH!!! WHAT DAY IS IT!? WAS I IN A COMA OR SOMETHING!?

oh. Nothing's happened this week. Maybe that explains why I'm devoid of excitement.

Welcome to the charts, blah blah blah, you know the drill by now, except NOTHING has happened. Yeah, you could probably repeat that phrase for the past eight years, but this week is a lot more stagnant than the others. There's barely, if any, new entries. That's not a good sign, especially for people like me who long for the days of the in-out in-out performances of the 2000s. It's sickening, sometimes, staring at how stagnant the 40 best-sellers are, and wondering if revelling in previous years of music charts isn't such a bad idea. But for now, I might as well get this over with.

Noah Kahan's at the top yet again. Never would've seen that coming. 6 weeks and counting now for what is slowly but surely getting on people's nerves. Look, if you had to pick a song to be No.1 for months on end, I could think of about a thousand better examples than this. But you know, good for him I guess. I'd certainly take it over the banal and exhausting waste of space that is Teddy Swims. Even though I'm pretty sure Sophie Ellis-Bextor is just cursed at this point. Just let her take the top spot you cowards.

There are two new Top 10 invitees this week, however, and they may as well be on different sides of the universe in terms of sound and quality. Shooting up to 5 is the misjudged Sam Ryder-esque change of pace from Benson Boone, who may finally be breaking through into the national consciousness with Beautiful Things, but at one major cost. As you've already known from the previous two weeks, this song is as limp as a donkey. I don't care how much he yells, it just makes him sound like an Americana Lewis Capaldi. And that's the worst thing I can possibly say about this tune. Apart from the fact that I have a phobia of English-speaking males with a little fondness for ballads. And it ain't changing now, that's for sure.

On the other hand, however, we have easily the most surprising Top 10 appearance of the year so far, in the form of YG Marley, who suddenly flies up 11 places to rest at No.9. If my memory is anything to go by, reggae hasn't had a Top 10 chance since... You know what? I can't remember. Definitely not this decade though. And there hasn't been anything with dub-like grooves since that 2017 UK election tune that no one cares enough to like (Liar Liar by Captain Ska), which is saying a lot about reggae's chart hopes recently. Especially with how popular afrobeats is. If it wasn't for YG's achievements, reggae may as well retire right now. Thankfully it hasn't, due in no small part to that Bob Marley biopic that arrives on Valentine's Day. He's also a descendant of Lauryn Hill, apparently. Because of course he is.

In album news, and all the hardwork hyping up The Last Dinner Party has paid off in dividends, as debut album Prelude To Ecstasy storms to the top with about 32,000 buyers. The performance of the album inevitably gives lead single Nothing Matters a boost, albeit not by much. Not that going up 3 to 19 is a bad thing, but it feels slightly underwhelming. Especially when Ella Henderson has now predictably shot up to 16, in a move that does not benefit anybody in the slightest. Did you know it took her 8 years to make 2 albums? Yeah. Me neither. Runner-up in the album stakes is unmemorable singer-songwriter Jamie Webster, who has at least sold 14,000 copies of his third album. So nobody will be forgetting him in a hurry then.

Re-entrants in the shapes of Kanye West and Mason vs. Princess Superstar do at least make this week somewhat more manageable, but the only TRUE new hit is all the way down at 40, in the shape of Home by hotly-tipped (no one's tipped them) duo Good Neighbours, whose debut single has gone viral on TikTok, and is a less palatable mirror to that Noah Kahan track that's just slipped out of the Top 10. Along with Popular, thank the lord. What was I talking about? Oh yeah, Home is bland and unspecial. The only new entry in the whole of the Top 40, and it makes me disinterested in the human race. Thanks, 2024.

Justin Timberlake goes up to 29 by the way, thanks to radio suffocating us to death with it. Good for him, but not for me, because I have to keep talking about it. Also, can people stop getting worked up about him and Britney Spears? 'Cause it's been more than 20 years and the fanboys STILL won't pipe down. Besides, Britney hasn't had a hit since 2015 (discounting Elton John of course). Looking at the iTunes reviews for his upcoming album just makes me feel bad, honestly. Doesn't make Selfish (the Timberlake one) any better, mind, but at least people haven't forgotten him. Like Jennifer Lopez, for example. Her new track Can't Get Enough has as much chance of breaking into the charts as my mum. Which is saying a LOT. I should be thankful I'm from the UK, where bland ballads, putrid pop and rubbish raps reign supreme.

Outside the 40, and it's only a matter of time before Nathan Evans breaches it with Heather On The Hill, given he's been in the midweek 40 TWICE now and still not achieved it. Despite everyone begging him not to make it. Explaining the success of Evergreen by Richy Mitch & The Coalminers takes more effort, even though all you need is TikTok to sum it up. Hazbin Hotel fever is suddenly hotting up, as two of it's most notable songs rise up to the 50s (I haven't watched the show, so can't comment.), and the highest new entry is at the whopping heights of 63. Step up Don Toliver (best known for being part of that Lemonade song in 2020, as well as No Idea) with Bandit, which is a shame that this is the best this week has to offer, as it's generic trash, er, I mean trap.

Also succeeding with their first release are NewEra at 78, which would be fine if it wasn't the most soul-sucking Ibiza anthem you could ever imagine. Rich Amiri's first chart hit ONE CALL has 48 million listens but only now enters at 82, Nathan Dawe returns at 87 and I don't care, Goddard's remix of Cat Burns's Go helped it do so well in 2022, and now they return the favour with Wasted Youth at 89, TikTok can be blamed for Artemas entering at 85 for if u think i'm pretty, meanwhile Aimee Carty becomes the latest in an annoying line of Olivia Rodrigo soundalikes (the scars of Caity Baser's Pretty Boys still haven't left me) in the form of 2 Days Into College at 84. Oh, and Jazzy's at 98 with her latest cut. Still doesn't change the fact that she is, by and large, a 1-hit wonder. Or 2, if you include Belters Only, but I don't. And honestly, I think that's for the best.

Down at 100, however, is a record that is devoid of critical analysis. Until recently, Cat Janice resembled another one of those people that got big because of O-Rod, what with her long hair, mascara-fuelled eyes and songs that Sabrina Carpenter wouldn't consider for a B-side. Then cancer happened, and now she's gonna perish. Literally, she's suffered the stereotypical hair loss most cancer sufferers face, and has gone for broke by making everyone who listens to new release Dance You Outta My Head donate to her 7 year-old son. It also meant, predictably, the iTunes chart getting locked up by her charms. No one else seems to have paid attention though, so it only debuts at 100. Her first (and only) chart appearance is great for her, but sadly, she could've done better than cod-Kylie pop. Just saying.

Next week is an LP free-for-all, with Super Bowl-powered Usher, Scandinavian superstar Zara Larsson, and critical darling Declan McKenna all releasing new albums, as well as Noah Kahan taking advantage of our money yet again with a new version of Stick Season. Because he hates us. Speaking of Caity, she's back, along with Bugzy Malone, d4vd, Jax Jones, Michael Marcagi, Kacey Musgraves, K-Trap and Sia + Kylie Minogue in tow. Except that came out midweek, so the latter doesn't stand a chance. Trust me, I know these things.

That's it from me this week. I'm off to watch Top Of The Pops repeats on BBC Four. One of them is the great Britpop battle of '95 between Blur and Oasis. It was a chart with a lot more new entries than this. What I wouldn't do for another one of those, eh?

Ah well, BYE!!!

(P.S. Do you ever wonder what the chart would be like nowadays if downloads never happened? We'd end up with a Top 10 that includes Liam Gallagher, Lana Del Rey, The 1975, Marc Almond and boygenius. And Billy Joel would be No.1. Maybe it's best we don't imagine that reality.)

that Cat Janice section is NOT okay. usually don’t have a problem with your comments but this is taking things too far. The poor woman is dying any day now of cancer and you want to say that she’s trying to force people to buy her song?? It’s just people having sympathy which from this comment I see you don’t have much of. Shame on you.

3

you probably should’ve ended the sermon before thinking about going for cat janice. she’s not “making” people donate to her kid, people are just choosing to do it because they’re sympathetic. and you just DONT say people haven’t “paid attention” just because it was barely streamed, people are doing it via itunes because you get more money from a paid download. that poor woman will be dead any time now and that’s your choice of words??

Felt like posting this first for once. I swear the negative categories keep getting bigger with every week that passes.

GIVE THESE LOT A KNIGHTHOOD FOR MAKING THESE TIER:

The Last Dinner Party - Nothing Matters [19] (Start taking bets on how far their album'll fall next week. I reckon they'll be at 13.)

Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten [14]

ALL-ROUND THRILLS ABOUND TIER:

Kanye West ft. Pusha T - Runaway [35] (I don't think it has a right to return to the Top 40, but I'm happy it has.)

YG Marley - Praise Jah In The Moonlight [9] (It's actually Crisis that's sampled, not Jamming. I feel like an idiot.)

Noah Kahan ft. Sam Fender - Homesick [11]

POSITIVELY COOL TIER:

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder On The Dancefloor [2]

Mason vs. Princess Superstar - Perfect (Exceeder) [39]

THEY'RE OK OR WHATEVER TIER:

Mitski - My Love Mine All Mine [25]

Noah Kahan - Stick Season [1]

Kenya Grace - Strangers [36] (Oh, so NOW it grows on me. Typical.)

Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer [10] (Given she's just announced an album, I don't think this is falling any lower at the present time. Unfortunately.)

Sonny Fodera/MK - Asking [24]

Ariana Grande - yes, and? [7]

Zara Larsson & David Guetta - On My Love [26] (The only good song on VENUS. Fight me.)

URBAN TIER:

21 Savage - redrum [18]

Flo Milli - Never Lose Me [15]

Megan Thee Stallion - HISS [37]

Jack Harlow - Lovin On Me [4]

Chris Brown - Angel Numbers / Ten Toes [34]

WELP. THESE SONGS AREN'T MUCH COP TIER:

Tate McRae - exes [23]

Good Neighbours - Home [40] (I can't be the only person here thinking one of the members is called Oil Fox, right?)

Ella Henderson ft. Rudimental - Alibi [16]

The Weeknd/Madonna/Playboi Carti - Popular [13]

Zach Bryan ft. Kacey Musgraves - I Remember Everything [21]

Justin Timberlake - Selfish [29] (Get ready for about 20 versions of this song in the coming weeks to milk his chart positions. You know you want it.)

Michael Marcagi - Scared To Start [31]

ONLY PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIKE MUSIC LIKE THESE SONGS (no offence) TIER:

Benson Boone - Beautiful Things [5]

The Weeknd/JENNIE/Lily Rose Depp - One Of The Girls [27]

Kygo & Ava Max - Whatever [28]

Paul Russell - Lil Boo Thang [33] (Apparently he was in a desk job 6 months ago. I think he should've stayed there instead of shoving this down our throats.)

Teddy Swims - Lose Control [3]

"only people who don't like music like these songs".....

Well it shows how in tune with music you are when two of them are in the top 5.

You come across as a really patronising selfish little who doesn't like it when they don't get their own way.

LMAO at hiss stabilising and big foot out of the chart altogether. i just love it when that woman ends up with egg all over her face. it’s really sad to see nicki go from making my favourite childhood songs and being a competent rapper to the uninspired sample songs on pink friday 2 AND this pathetic excuse of a “diss track”

these h0es don’t be mad at megan, these h0es mad at megan’s law 😌💅

M

3

Totally agree!! I’ll forever love Nicki’s music and admittedly I did like PF2 more than most people but she has absolutely gone insane. I didn’t even bother listening to Big Foot because from what I’ve heard it’s just her Twitter coke rants all over again đŸ˜© Shame HISS won’t really last going into next week but seeing it get another week in the top 40 was such a pleasant surprise

avatar

itsnoodleszn_

2

oh same, i even like some of the pf2 songs (let me calm down (i love j cole so this was always gonna be good), barbie dangerous, big difference, last time i saw you to name a few), but yeah as you say big foot is less of a song and more of her twxtter rants
and that asmr outro doesn’t help matters

M

yess Let Me Calm Down was one of my favourites too, also it kinda that Last Time I Saw You flopped because it was actually really good. oh god yeah I’ve heard things about that outro, put me off even more

I don't know, Noah Kahan releasing a new version of his album may swing things in his favour once more.

my highlights and takeaways from the top 100:

  • stick seasons actually a pretty good song, but i hope it doesn’t overstay its welcome at number 1. getting more into noah tho!
  • the hazbin hotel songs still going strong are AMAZING, i could talk forever about how much fun i had with this show đŸ„č
  • redrum steadily falling is ironic because the albums growing on me quite a lot
  • really not a fan of beautiful things becoming a hit, his voice grinds my gears a lot. i’ll take praise jah in the moonlight though, happily! bob marley film out next week so perfect timing (unless it was for the film?)
  • loving the last dinner party at number 1 on the albums chart. what a banger of a debut album and i hope they’re the future of art-rock
  • bandit is also awesome, being a tame impala fan i instantly clocked the sample and it’s one of the few songs that uses a sample right. isn’t that right, david guetta?
  • not related to the charts but im having a taylor swift-themed night in tomorrow 💞

stay safe out there and have a great weekend!

No Top 40 rankings or personal chart from me this week.

However, I will say that for the former, it’s cool to see ‘Selfish’ climb a few places even if I’m disappointed that ‘Can’t Catch Me Now’ left it.

As for the latter, ‘Eras Of Us’ by FLETCHER was my #1 song of the week, while classic throwbacks including ‘This Girl’, ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’, ‘Waves (Robin Schulz Remix)’, ‘Viva La Vida’ and ‘Sweet Caroline’ will all be challenging it next week! 😊

‘HISS’ getting another week in the Top 40 while ‘Big Foot’ plummeted out of the chart altogether after one week is so satisfying to see.
