hey what's up everyone!  if anyone's wondering who the group is in my icon pic, it's the u.s. band the legendary beach boys.  they were big over here in the 60s & early 70s with a wealth of timeless music!  they would be in the top 10 with artists like the beatles, elvis, the supremes, the jackson 5, etc.

known for their rich harmonies, here are some great tracks to check out: fun fun fun, good timin *1 of my very faves!*, do you wanna dance? *another great one!*, i'm so young *their harmonies are superb on this one!*,  dance dance dance, good vibrations, surfin' usa, kiss me baby, in my room, don't worry baby, kokomo, i get around, wouldn't it be nice?, you still believe in me.  check 'em out!  nothing but ear candy with the beach boys, the beatles & i think also the rolling stones were huge fans of theirs.

here are some really good albums of theirs to check out: 'the beach boys today" *my personal fave!  their harmonies are very lush & perfectly made, can't say it any other way*, pet sounds, the beach boys xmas album *they're known for their xmas smash single 'little saint nick'*, all summer long *both john lennon & paul mccartney were crazy about this album!*

Hi - can anyone explain why Lewis Capaldi doesn't have 3 tracks from the extended version of the album in the singles chart?  Any other album from such an artist always gets the maximum 3 most popular tracks entering the charts.  Are they somehow ineligible?  Just curious if anyone knows?  Thanks.

C

conor

they simply didnt stream enough to get enough sales for top 100! none are inelligible, but they came out on monday so lost a good 3 days of sales which wouldve hindered them

And guess what, I have been looking at the charts since 2018 and I logged onto my account (Which I havent even used before) to reply to your comment. And we dont care that your friend (which is probably you on an alt) got banned from piran's discord server. Get a grip and leave.

Chart Review 05/01/24

HAPPY NEW YEAR WHICH I WOULD'VE SAID FOUR DAYS AGO IF THERE WAS A CHART THAT DAY!!!

But enough jibber-jabbering. This is the traditional aftermath chart, where all the Christmas songs decide to hibernate for another 10 months, giving us loads of time to talk POP. And RAP. And DANCE. And all the other genres, providing they make the chart. All but 3 of last week's Top 40 are classified as NEW/RE-entries, leaving many people dumbfounded as to the massive climbs certain songs can take in January. 8 of these are ACTUALLY new songs to the Top 40, along with 3 LEGITIMATE re-entrants, and by that I mean tracks that haven't been here for AGES. None of this Miley Cyrus and Dua Lipa jumping back in garbage. One of last week's hits is No. 1, and it shouldn't come as a surprise as to who it is.

Enter, Noah Kahan. Or Kanah, as this loser used to call him.

His climb of 9 places officially makes him the greatest thing to ever come out of Vermont, one of the lesser-loved US states, second to Ohio. Obviously. Also Wyoming, thinking about it. Oddly, last time I did a review was when this song first charted. 13 weeks ago. Thankfully, it's given me time to think about his seemingly inevitable march up to the top, but in truth, he may be heralding an acoustic revolution that no one needed. Still though, Stick Season (the song, not the album) gives him a 33% rate of No.1's, with Northern Attitude sitting at 28 currently, and Dial Drunk having hit the chart in the summer. And with that, the spirit of Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons, and Noah & The Whale has clearly been tampered with. Not that it's a bad thing, but this could be an omen for a (slightly-grim) future. And all it took was for Olivia Rodrigo to mutter this song on Radio 1's Live Lounge. Because of course she did.

Apart from him, the rest of the songs here all tell a tale known as IT'S A MESS. Jack Harlow's back at 2, cassö beats Tate McRae to 3rd, the likes of Tyla (BBC Sound of 2024 wannabe) and Swifty make the most of their ACR resets, and Drake finally has a song that doesn't fade in the memory, as Rich Baby Daddy becomes his 45th Top 10 effort. Also clattering his way here is Billy Gillies, the Norn' Iron DJ now responsible for the biggest dance hit of the moment. And all without Spotify's assistance. Then again, I don't use Apple Music, so clearly I'm missing out.

But for now, we need to talk Saltburn.

The Amazon Prime exclusive-turned internet sensation has quickly cycled into motion, with a soundtrack filled with numerous hits of varying levels of quality, like Blur, Bloc Party, Tomcraft, MGMT, and Ladytron. 3 of these have suddenly become the talk of the town. And none more so than Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

Yes, THAT artist. You know her, right? Fronted an indie band in 1998 (theaudience), took Groovejet to No.1, had hits like Mixed Up World and Catch You, hasn't appeared since 2014. Bit of an awkward career. And now there's another twist in the tale.

2001 smash Murder On The Dancefloor being played over the kind of scene that makes middle-aged men, ermm, HARD, has resulted in some sort of Kate Bush-esque revival that no one could've forecasted. Definitely not me. And now it shoots back into the charts, at 8. EIGHT. Have you seen the Spotify charts!? She may as well top the charts by the time we get to Valentine's Day at this rate! Also throwing it's weight is Perfect (Exceeder), a No.3 effort for 1-hit wonder Mason and 2-hit wonder Princess Superstar in 2007, which creeps in at 40. And at 31 is the The Killers' Mr. Brightside, which does appear here, and thus completes an 11-year old mission to get back in the 40. The song with the longest stay in the charts, well, EVER peaked at 10 in '04, spent 3 weeks in the 40, re-joined the Radio 1 charade in 2013, and that's about it. Until now. A greatest hits collection called Rebel Diamonds hit No.1 on the album chart a few weeks ago, so that may also be to blame. But I highly doubt it.

Elsewhere, it's an absolute riot, with the 14th biggest seller being a guy called Teddy Swims who A) has TikTok on his side, and B) sounds a bit Radio 2-ish. He also isn't very good, which isn't helping his case. I don't care what anyone says, Lose Control isn't worth it's salt. Now leave me alone. Is what I would say, if Fred Again.. hadn't already stolen that phrase and used it for his new hit. leavemealone charted at 30 at Christmas, but now rockets up to 11. Sadly, it's nowhere near the levels of adore u, ten, and Turn On The Lights Again, which is a huge shame. Not like the general public care.

I don't have the energy to talk about Lewis Capaldi's deluxe album chart-rigging nonsense.

One place below Paul Russell's soul-sucking song is The Weeknd's latest chart-flog. One Of Your Girls is most notable for Jack Saunders playing the Troye Sivan song on the chart. I would continue but his new one is so dull I can't be bothered listening to it to give my opinion. The fact it has JENNIE from Blackpink on it doesn't help matters.

There's also a 9-minute Kanye West album track from 2010 here, but given it charted in November, I unfortunately can't give it a paragraph. In other news, Sabrina Carpenter grabs her 3rd Top 40 appearance with Feather, and the third where I struggle to come up with a reason to listen to it. Apart from TikTok, which already helped Nonsense reach 32 last year, and the people who are still caught up in that O-Rod feud from a few years back. It says a lot that I prefer Tate McRae in the underwhelming Stateside pop magnet stakes.

A month after Pink Friday 2 came out, Nicki Minaj can finally have a little chart invasion, in the forms of 26 and 30. Both sample songs, and both work pretty well. If anything though, Pink Friday Girls' usage of Cyndi Lauper puts her in a good position for Record of 2024 for me. In the first week of the year. Whoopee. Everybody, meanwhile, has to make do with the repetitive drafting of Junior Senior to get by, but given it's higher in the chart, it may come as undeniable proof that people aren't streaming the correct songs. I would've preferred Red Ruby Da Sleeve to make it though.

As for the others, Central Cee grabs his 312th hit this decade. There may be a slight over-exaggeration in that sentence. But Entrapreneur rises to 36 after charting last week. One place above is JID, who you may know from that Imagine Dragons song no one shut up about in 2021. You know, THAT one. Don't think you hadn't forgotten. Thankfully, his solo chart debut is a lot more manageable, as he, 21 Savage and Baby Tate do their thing on Surround Sound. This is partly to do with TikTok. In other news, there are 60 seconds in a minute.

And to conclude the new hits, I can now confirm that Radio 1 DJ and dance favourite-of-some Eliza Rose is NOT a 1-hit wonder. Already under threat when this first charted in 2023, Body Moving now reaches 38. Good for her, good for Calvin Harris, and good for everyone who thought she wouldn't be heard again after B.O.T.A. reached No.1. Gonna be honest, I was one of those people. And now there's egg on my face.

The rest of the Top 100 is an absolute riot, although Toxic by Songer rising 54 places gives you a good idea as to who will be here next week. The new stuff are Flo Milli at 63, Travis Scott at 71, and one of the songs from that new Wonka movie at 78. My Record of 2023 re-enters at 93 (as you can see, I am truly gutted), The Beatles' last ever song that I forgot to talk about is at 96, and Marvin Gaye is also back. If you have a reason for this, I would gladly want to know. Also next week is somewhat dreary, with only Bring Me The Horizon and Liam Gallagher willing to take a stab at the chart, and the most high-profile album release being Shed Seven. The typical Britpop elder statesmen that no one genuinely loves. The last word today, though, can go to the fact that there is STILL CHRISTMAS SONGS IN THE TOP 100. Props to Wham! and Sam Ryder for remaining, but still. I would've preferred to not appear at all instead of falling 82 spots. Just saying.

Right. That's it then. 1 week down, 51 to go. Good luck, my sanity. You're gonna need it. 😬

(P.S. Remember these messages I did every week? I remember just as much as, well, no one, 'cos I didn't see anyone talking about them. Not that I cared, but there's a good reason I hibernated for a few months. And DEFINITELY not because I can't take criticism. Honest.)

Thanks for the detailed comment. I was wondering why a more than 20 year old song by Sophie Ellis Bextor was in the top ten, but probably shouldn't be a surprise these days.

Liam Gallagher & Shed Seven next week? Is it the 90s again?

i probably won’t see the film, but the saltburn aftermath was crazy this week! i remember hearing perfect (exceeder) when i was very very young but i forgot it existed till now. nice to see some forgotten bangers resurface

in fact, old music has been kicking new music’s in general on streaming this past week. runaway, the night we met, one dance, i wanna be yours, riptide to name only a few. that’s kind of expected though considering we’ve had slow weeks for new releases.

I still remember listening to the original purely instrumental "Exceeder" in the summer of 2006 and later thinking they ruined it by adding annoying vocals for the single release. Scary to think that's nearly 18 years ago.

I haven't seen Saltburn. I saw it advertised at the local cinema last month but have more than enough with posh boys in our government without watching them on film as well.

he finally did it. jid has a top 40 hit as a lead artist - he’s made so many impeccable albums containing some of the best rapping skills i’ve heard that i’m surprised it’s taken him this long to secure a top 40 hit. regardless, surround sound is EXCELLENT on every aspect of the world and definitely the best song in the top 40 (although mitski’s close, hope to get tickets to her show soon!)

Pleasantly surprised that Mitski got an ACR reset midweek! Also fantastic seeing ‘I Remember Everything’ reach a new peak. Even though it’s unlikely, I really hope it can get at least a week in the Top 10.

‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ returning to the Top 10 is absolutely amazing news to start off the year. First time it’s been there in 22 years. Such an iconic disco anthem! ❤️

Also ‘Mr Brightside’ gets its highest chart position since early 2014 (can’t believe that was a whole decade ago now!)… and ‘Perfect (Exceeder)’ also getting a resurgence due to Saltburn? This week was amazing for party classics!

I knew there was a town called Saltburn, but didn't know it was in the North East! 😅

Great for those hits to re-enter, but I was personally hoping for Time To Pretend, or Destroy Everything You Touch, or Country House, or...

Or any of the others beside Mr. Brightside, but these will do for me.

I've never heard of the town Saltburn-by-the-Sea, but I assume it's a great place to be. I prefer Cornwall, personally. :)
